Often described as the 'best of New England by the sea,' the Pemaquid Peninsula is an area of incomparable natural beauty complemented by a legendary heritage unique to this coastal region. Since recorded history, Native Americans and early settlers (discovered by the English as early as 1605) explored and worked the miles of coastline from open ocean to hidden coves and tidal rivers.
Today, quaint working fishing villages, quiet harbors, classic New England architecture, rolling landscapes bounded by centuries-old stone walls are all reminders of an earlier time. The peninsula is defined by its history and hasn't been lost to the rigors of 21st century development inherent to most seaside communities.
"A step back in time..." is an appreciative, often-coined phrase. The clock hasn't stopped completely however! Our peninsula communities are vibrant, the proud light of Pemaquid Lighthouse continues to shine. Sophisticated eateries, luxury lodging, renowned galleries and unique shops co-exist with designated historical sites, cultural centers, protected waters and natural preserves. Summer programs from Audubon camp to sailing school attract all ages. Artists, furniture makers, and crafts people of all disciplines offer some of the finest works to be found anywhere in their open studios. Year-round and seasonal residents or visitors enjoy the natural and commercial diversity throughout all four seasons.
The Pemaquid (defined as 'long point' by the Native Americans) communities continue their legacy as a popular destination. The long-held traditions at the heart of these villages thrive. We hope to welcome you to Pemaquid, a very special place to write your own history.
